At the SI Guatemala Education Site, we have the privilege of working with elementary-age children, their families, and public-school teachers in San Miguel Milpas Altas. Our goal is to support students with learning difficulties while also teaching them about Christ and what it means to have a personal relationship with Him.

Over the last year, I’ve had the joy of working closely with a 10-year-old boy named Fabricio. When I first met him last September, he was in third grade and struggling deeply. He battled low grades, couldn’t read, had trouble with simple math, and was extremely hyperactive. More than anything, he lacked confidence. His mother was worried and unsure how to support him. After meeting with her and his teacher, we created a plan to work together twice a week on reading, math, emotional regulation, and executive functioning skills.

Progress wasn’t instant, but Fabricio never gave up. Now the growth we’re seeing is incredible! He is reading full books at an intermediate level. At t

he start of the year, he could only sound out about five words in a minute. Today he reads and comprehends around 40 words per minute and has mastered his syllables and syllable chunks. In math, he’s moved far beyond basic addition and subtraction into advanced multiplication and even the beginnings of long division. Where he once barely passed classes, he is now receiving passing grades across the board and being recognized at school for his hard work. He has become confident, motivated, and an encourager to his classmates.

Even more beautiful is the spiritual transformation taking place in his life. This year we’ve studied 12 characteristics of God, memorized five Bible verses, and spent time in meaningful devotional conversations. Fabricio remembers details, asks thoughtful questions, and is genuinely exploring what it means to follow Christ. Watching him hide God’s Word in his heart has been one of the greatest blessings.

This is only the beginning, and I know God has incredible plans for his life. It’s an honor to walk alongside him and be part of his testimony.
