We would like to share an encouraging story about how God is blessing us and others through home health physical therapy in Nicaragua.

We started a new project in June of 2024 in a community called La Montañita, which focused on providing quality physical therapy care to those with limited access to health care. The people living in this community have trouble accessing services due to geographic isolation, limited public transit, and financial hardship. Throughout the second half of 2024, we had the opportunity to help 13 people who were suffering from various physical disabilities. Most of them hadn’t been able to access physical therapy or, due to complications, weren’t able to continue with their rehab. However, there was one patient in particular who was most in need of our services.

Mr. Nicholas chopped and sold firewood in La Montañita, using a horse-drawn wagon for deliveries. One day, a drunk driver hit him, throwing him from the wagon. He woke up in the hospital a week later with a traumatic brain injury and had surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. When we visited him at home, he was bedbound, unable to care for himself, and on a liquid diet. His mother, sister, and brother were his caregivers. He was not aware of his surroundings when we first met him.

Our team had the privilege of training Mr. Nicholas’ family in important acute care skills, such as passive exercises, transfer techniques, and preventing pressure sores and contractures. We also shared our faith, and they were receptive to our prayers. During the second half of 2024, we visited Mr. Nicholas’ home 1-2 times a month to aid in his rehabilitation. Through God’s blessings, Mr. Nicholas made significant strides in his physical and mental health, defying the neurologists’ expectations by regaining his ability to speak and walk. Now, we visit just to admire his progress. He is open to a relationship with God and credits Him for his recovery.
