After eight faithful years of service, today we celebrate the retirement of Rebeca Diaz—a beloved member of our team and a true light in the communities she has served. While we wish she could remain with us, Rebeca has decided to step into this new chapter of life due to some accumulating health concerns and having reached the official retirement age. It’s bittersweet, but we wholeheartedly support her decision and celebrate all she has poured into her ministry.

Last month, our team had the joy of surprising Rebeca with a heartfelt retirement party. Dressed in scrubs (a nod to her service in the clinic), we spent the day playing games, sharing affirmations, and enjoying a meal together. It was a special time to honor her love, hospitality, and unwavering commitment to those she served. (You can watch the video we made for her HERE.)

Rebeca’s role in our clinic was the perfect complement to Dr. Celia’s work. While Dr. Celia spent thoughtful, one-on-one time discerning the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of each patient, Rebeca lovingly welcomed others with her contagious smile, offering them scripture and encouragement while they waited. Her presence brought joy to a place often associated with pain, and her ministry was a living example of Christ’s love.

At the close of the party, Rebeca shared a few words that so beautifully reflected her heart and her place in the mission of Students International. She said:

“I just wanted to be a light and to bring happiness into a place that is always known for sickness and pain. When people come to a clinic, it is because they feel ill—and they really need a smile, and the love of Jesus, to help boost their spirits.”

Yes, Rebeca—exactly that. In Matthew 5:13–16, Jesus calls us to be salt and light, and Rebeca has lived that out with grace and strength. At Students International, we strive for our staff to be beacons of hope and healing at each of our ministry sites, working toward transformation in every area of life. Rebeca embodied this calling, and we are deeply thankful for the years she walked this path with us.

Though she may be stepping away from formal ministry, we are confident she will continue to be a radiant light wherever she goes. As Scripture reminds us:

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16
